Composition (Semester 1)

This course is designed to help students develop effective writing skills in English. Upon completion of this course, students will be equipped to write a five-paragraph essay using a variety of rhetorical modes. Over the duration of the course, students will be exposed to a wide selection of printed and digitally published material.

American Popular Culture (Semester 1)

This course will explore the apparently pervasive force of American popular culture within local and global contexts. We will begin by coming to terms with the terms 'popular' and 'culture' and will seek to develop working definitions of each that will inform further inquiry. These inquiries will include; popular music, subcultures, gender / sexuality and the popular gaze, communications theory, cultural studies, advertising and the media, fan culture, cultural resistance and cyber-media. Other avenues of investigation will also be explored as they are discussed and developed.

Advantage Class
Teacher: Joe Cooperman

The Advantage Class is aimed at EFL students with highly advanced English language skill and proficiency  who are seeking to hone their understanding of Western culture, politics and society. This course will be entirely seminar based whereby students themselves will develop presentations and direct in-class discussions and debates. This course will utilize news articles as its source material and will cover recent events as they are represented in print and broadcast media.

Intermediate Class
Teacher: Joe Cooperman

This class is especially designed for intermediate level English speakers who are interested in improving their communicative English ability. Specifically, this course focuses on improving students listening and conversation skills. Task oriented and activity based group work is emphasized as well as various presentation modeling styles.
